Rabies

Infection by lyssavirus through contact with saliva of infected animal - usually dog or bat
incubation period varies from weeks to months

Clinical

Prodrome very much like flu:

  1. headaches
  2. fever
  3. general weakness
  4. numbness or tingling around the bite
  5. with progression to muscle spasms, fear of water, and convulsions.

Ultimately fatal in 100% cases when symptoms present.

Management

  1. early suspicion of exposure - human rabies immunoglobulin (HRIG)
